Chapter 59: Icons Political
Political Icons
Let me be very clear and honest with you right from the beginning (teacher mode on):
Font Awesome 5 does NOT have an official “Political Icons” category.
There is also no “Political Icons” page on W3Schools for Font Awesome 5.
What usually happens is:
- People search for “Font Awesome 5 political icons” because they want icons for elections, voting, democracy, flags, ballot boxes, podiums, candidates, political parties, government buildings, scales of justice, megaphones for campaigns, etc.
- Google shows results from Font Awesome 6 or 7 (which do have a proper “Political” / “Social” subcategory added around 2022–2023).
- Or they find old blog posts / CodePen demos that mix FA5 + FA6 icons.
- Or they land on the Font Awesome 6 Political page and think it’s FA5.
So today I’m going to give you the real, accurate answer for Font Awesome 5 (the version W3Schools still teaches in their FA5 sections in 2026).
1. Political Icons actually available in Font Awesome 5 Free
Font Awesome 5 has no dedicated “Political” category.
You can only use general-purpose icons that people repurpose for political, election, democracy, government, campaign, voting, and civic themes. Here are the ones most commonly used for political designs in FA5 free:
| Icon name | Code example | Looks like | Typical political / election use |
|---|---|---|---|
| fa-landmark | <i class=”fas fa-landmark”></i> | 🏛️ Government building | Parliament, courthouse, capitol, ministry |
| fa-balance-scale | <i class=”fas fa-balance-scale”></i> | ⚖️ Scales of justice | Law, justice, court, democracy |
| fa-balance-scale-left / right | <i class=”fas fa-balance-scale-left”></i> | ⚖️ Tilted scales | Imbalance, verdict, political decision |
| fa-gavel | <i class=”fas fa-gavel”></i> | 🔨 Gavel / judge hammer | Court, judgment, legislation |
| fa-vote-yea | <i class=”fas fa-vote-yea”></i> | ✅ Vote yes / checkmark | Voting yes / approval (added in later FA5 patches) |
| fa-vote-nay | Not in FA5 free | — | — (added in FA6) |
| fa-bullhorn | <i class=”fas fa-bullhorn”></i> | 📣 Megaphone | Campaign speech, announcement, rally |
| fa-microphone | <i class=”fas fa-microphone”></i> | 🎤 Microphone | Political speech, press conference, debate |
| fa-flag | <i class=”fas fa-flag”></i> | 🏳️ Flag | National flag, campaign flag |
| fa-flag-checkered | <i class=”fas fa-flag-checkered”></i> | 🏁 Checkered flag | Finish line / election result |
| fa-users | <i class=”fas fa-users”></i> | 👥 People / crowd | Voters, supporters, rally |
| fa-user-tie | <i class=”fas fa-user-tie”></i> | 👔 Person in suit | Politician, candidate, official |
| fa-hand-point-right | <i class=”fas fa-hand-point-right”></i> | 👉 Pointing hand | “Vote here”, “Point to candidate” |
| fa-handshake | <i class=”fas fa-handshake”></i> | 🤝 Handshake | Agreement, coalition, deal |
| fa-chart-line | <i class=”fas fa-chart-line”></i> | 📈 Growth chart | Poll results, election trends |
Bottom line for FA5 free in 2026 The strongest political icons in Font Awesome 5 are:
- fa-landmark (government building)
- fa-balance-scale (justice / law)
- fa-gavel (court / legislation)
- fa-bullhorn (campaign / rally)
- fa-microphone (speech / debate)
- fa-users (voters / crowd)
There is no:
- Ballot box / voting box
- Vote / checkmark in box
- Podium / lectern
- Candidate / politician silhouette
- Election day calendar
- Campaign button / badge
- Political party logo placeholders
All of those were added in Font Awesome 6 or are Pro-only in FA5.
2. What people usually mean when they ask for “FA5 Political Icons”
They are almost always thinking about Font Awesome 6 or 7 (released starting 2022), which added a proper Political / Civic / Election collection in the free version.
Here are the most popular political icons that exist in FA6/7 free (not in FA5):
- fa-ballot-check (ballot with checkmark)
- fa-vote-yea / vote-nay
- fa-podium
- fa-person-booth (voting booth)
- fa-landmark-dome (capitol building)
- fa-landmark-flag (government with flag)
- fa-scale-balanced (newer balance scale)
- fa-megaphone (updated bullhorn)
- fa-hand-fist (raised fist – protest / activism)
- fa-flag-checkered (finish line / election result)
So when you see nice, modern political/election icon sets online in 2025–2026 (with ballot boxes, voting booths, podiums, checkmarks in boxes, etc.), they are 99% of the time using Font Awesome 6 or 7, not FA5.
