Chapter 111: Icons Maps

What is Google Maps Icons

Let me explain it very slowly, very clearly, and very honestly — like a real teacher who wants you to really understand and never fall into the same trap again.

Short & truthful answer first (write this down)

There is no official icon set called “Google Maps Icons” in 2026.

Google does not publish, distribute, or officially name any public library / icon pack / asset collection as:

  • Google Maps Icons
  • Google Maps Marker Icons
  • Google Maps UI Icons
  • Google Maps Design Icons
  • Google Maps Symbols

There is no downloadable “Google Maps Icons” package, no NPM package, no Google Fonts link, no CDN, and no Figma community file officially released by Google under that name.

So when people search for “Google Maps Icons” (especially in 2025–2026), they are almost always making one of these five very common mix-ups:

  1. They are looking for Material Symbols (Google’s official icon library) and want icons that are visually similar to the ones used inside Google Maps (location pin, directions arrow, traffic, transit, walking, biking, etc.).
  2. They want the default map marker / pin icon that Google Maps uses (the famous red teardrop pin) and think Google provides it as a separate downloadable icon (they don’t — it’s part of the Maps JavaScript API rendering engine).
  3. They saw someone use the phrase “Google Maps icons” in a tutorial, blog post, Stack Overflow answer, Reddit thread, Figma file, or design hand-off and thought it was an official product name (it isn’t — it’s just a descriptive term).
  4. They are looking for third-party icon packs (free or paid) that try to copy the Google Maps look (flat map pins, direction arrows, category icons for restaurants/hotels/gas stations/etc.).
  5. They want the custom icons / symbols that can be used inside Google Maps JavaScript API markers (custom markers, SVG paths, icon fonts), but again — Google does not provide a ready-made “Maps Icons” set for this.

Bottom line (very important):

There is no separate “Google Maps Icons” library released by Google. The closest thing you can use is Material Symbols — Google’s official icon library — which contains many icons that are visually very close to what you see in Google Maps.

2. What icons does Google actually use inside Google Maps? (2026 reality)

Google Maps uses three different kinds of visuals for its icons/symbols:

Type Where you see it Can you download/use them separately? Source / how Google creates them
Map marker pins (the red teardrop) Every place / search result / saved location No Internal rendering engine (Maps JavaScript API)
Category / POI icons Restaurant 🍔, hotel 🏨, gas ⛽, ATM 🏧, etc. Partially (via Material Symbols) Mostly from Material Symbols + custom tweaks
UI controls & buttons Directions arrow, layers button, zoom +/-, etc. Yes Material Symbols (same as Google apps)

So:

  • The famous red location pinnot publicly downloadable as an SVG/PNG (Google does not release it)
  • Many category icons (restaurant, hospital, museum…) → very similar to Material Symbols icons
  • All buttons, toggles, arrows, zoom controls → directly from Material Symbols

3. The closest official icons you can use (Material Symbols – 2026)

These are the Material Symbols icons that are visually closest to what people see in Google Maps and that developers most often use when they want a “Google Maps style” look.

Purpose / Maps feature Material Symbols name (2026) Looks like (description) Typical use when mimicking Google Maps
Location pin / marker location_on 📍 classic red pin style Place marker, saved location

Biking / cycle route directions_bike 🚲 bicycle Bicycle directions
Public transit directions_transit 🚌 bus / train icon Transit / metro / bus directions
Zoom in zoom_in 🔍 + Zoom in button
Zoom out zoom_out 🔍 – Zoom out button
Layers / map type layers ▦ stacked layers Map type / layers menu

Gas / petrol station local_gas_station ⛽ gas pump Fuel station

4. Real, copy-paste examples (how people actually use these icons in 2026)

Example 1: “Get Directions” button (very common pattern)

Example 2: Location pin + place card (Google Maps style)

Example 3: Map controls (zoom + layers)

Final Teacher Advice

If you want Google Maps-style icons (location pin, directions arrow, car/bus/walk/bike icons, zoom controls, layers button, etc.) in 2026:
