Chapter 60: Icons Religion
Religion Icons
Let me be very clear and honest with you right from the beginning (teacher mode on):
Font Awesome 5 does NOT have an official “Religion Icons” category.
There is also no “Religion Icons” page on W3Schools for Font Awesome 5.
What usually happens is:
- People search for “Font Awesome 5 religion icons” because they want symbols for major world religions (Christian cross, Islamic crescent & star, Hindu Om, Buddhist wheel, Jewish Star of David, Taoist yin-yang, Sikh Khanda, Shinto torii gate, etc.).
- Google shows results from Font Awesome 6 or 7 (which do have a proper “Religion” category added around 2022β2023).
- Or they find old blog posts / CodePen demos that mix FA5 + FA6 icons.
- Or they land on the Font Awesome 6 Religion page and think it’s FA5.
So today I’m going to give you the real, accurate answer for Font Awesome 5 (the version W3Schools still teaches in their FA5 sections in 2026).
1. Religion Icons actually available in Font Awesome 5 Free
Font Awesome 5 has no dedicated “Religion” category.
You can only use general-purpose icons that people repurpose for religious, spiritual, faith, worship, and interfaith themes. Here are the ones most commonly used for religion-related designs in FA5 free:
| Icon name | Code example | Looks like | Typical religion / faith use |
|---|---|---|---|
| fa-pray | <i class=”fas fa-pray”></i> | π Praying hands | Prayer, worship, meditation (most used) |
| fa-praying-hands | <i class=”fas fa-praying-hands”></i> | π Praying hands (alias) | Same as above β very common for religion |
| fa-cross | <i class=”fas fa-cross”></i> | βοΈ Latin cross | Christianity (the strongest religious symbol in FA5) |
| fa-dove | <i class=”fas fa-dove”></i> | ποΈ Dove | Peace, Holy Spirit, Christianity, interfaith |
| fa-book | <i class=”fas fa-book”></i> | π Book / scripture | Bible, Quran, Vedas, religious texts |
| fa-book-open | <i class=”fas fa-book-open”></i> | π Open book | Reading holy books / scripture |
| fa-star | <i class=”fas fa-star”></i> | β Star | Star of David (Judaism), general divine symbol |
| fa-star-and-crescent | Not in FA5 free | β | β (added in FA6) |
| fa-om | Not in FA5 free | β | β (added in FA6) |
| fa-dharmachakra | Not in FA5 free | β | β (added in FA6) |
| fa-yin-yang | Not in FA5 free | β | β (added in FA6) |
Bottom line for FA5 free in 2026 Font Awesome 5 has almost no direct religious symbols. The only really usable religious icons are:
- fa-pray / fa-praying-hands π (universal prayer gesture)
- fa-cross βοΈ (Christianity)
- fa-dove ποΈ (peace / Holy Spirit)
There is no:
- Islamic crescent & star βͺοΈ
- Hindu Om ΰ₯
- Buddhist wheel / dharmachakra βΈοΈ
- Jewish Star of David β‘οΈ
- Taoist yin-yang β―οΈ
- Sikh Khanda
- Shinto torii gate β©οΈ
- BahΓ‘’Γ nine-pointed star
- Jain swastika
- Pagan pentacle
All of those were added in Font Awesome 6 or are Pro-only in FA5.
2. What people usually mean when they ask for “FA5 Religion Icons”
They are almost always thinking about Font Awesome 6 or 7 (released starting 2022), which added a proper Religion / Faith / Spiritual collection in the free version.
Here are the most popular religion icons that exist in FA6/7 free (not in FA5):
- fa-cross βοΈ (same as FA5)
- fa-praying-hands π (same)
- fa-dove ποΈ (same)
- fa-star-of-david β‘οΈ
- fa-crescent-and-star βͺοΈ
- fa-om ΰ₯
- fa-dharmachakra βΈοΈ
- fa-yin-yang β―οΈ
- fa-khanda (Sikh symbol)
- fa-torii-gate β©οΈ
- fa-cross-crossed (alternative cross)
- fa-book-quran π
- fa-book-bible π
So when you see beautiful interfaith / religion icon sets online in 2025β2026 (with Om, crescent-star, Star of David, dharmachakra, etc.), they are 99% of the time using Font Awesome 6 or 7, not FA5.
