Chapter 73: Maps Types
1. What is “Maps Types” actually? (Very clear definition first)
Maps Types (also called map styles, map modes, map views, or map layers) are the different ways Google Maps can show the same place.
It is like looking at the same city through different glasses:
- One glass shows only roads and names (normal map)
- Another glass shows real photos from the sky (satellite)
- Another glass shows live traffic colors
- Another glass shows hills and mountains with shadows
All these are the same place — just different types / layers turned on or off.
In Google Maps, when you tap the layers icon (small square box usually in top-right corner), you see the list of available map types.
2. Main Maps Types in Google Maps (What you can switch between)
Open Google Maps right now and follow along — tap the layers icon (square box) and look at the options:
| Map Type Name | What it shows / how it looks | When / why to use it | Try this right now (30 seconds) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Default / Map | Clean roads, names, colors (blue water, green parks) | Everyday navigation, driving, walking, searching places | This is what opens first — the normal view you use daily |
| Satellite | Real aerial photos from satellites (no drawn roads) | See real buildings, trees, rivers, roof shapes, new constructions | Layers → Satellite → zoom on your house / college → see real roof |
| Terrain | Shows hills, mountains, elevation with shadows | Trekking, hiking, geography, understanding landscape | Layers → More → Terrain → zoom on hilly areas (e.g. near Vikarabad) |
| Traffic (overlay) | Colors on roads: green = smooth, yellow = slow, red = jam | Driving, planning fastest route, avoiding traffic | Layers → Traffic → look for red patches on main roads (e.g. NH 44) |
| Transit (overlay) | Shows metro, bus, train lines & stations | Using public transport, finding nearest metro/bus stop | Layers → Transit → see Hyderabad metro lines in blue |
| Bicycling (overlay) | Shows bike lanes, cycle paths, elevation changes | Cycling, planning safe bike route | Layers → Bicycling → see bike-friendly roads in your area |
Important note:
- Default / Map / Satellite / Terrain are main types — you choose one at a time
- Traffic / Transit / Bicycling are overlays — you can turn them on on top of any main type
Example: You can have Satellite + Traffic together — real photos with jam colors on roads.
3. Quick Practice You Can Do Right Now (2–3 Minutes)
- Open Google Maps on your phone
- Go to a busy area (Hitech City, Charminar, Secunderabad station…)
- Tap layers icon (square box top-right)
- Switch to Satellite → zoom in → see real buildings, cars, trees
- Switch back to Default (Map)
- Turn Traffic on → see red/yellow/green on main roads
- Turn Transit on → see metro/rail lines
- Turn everything off → back to clean map
Do this 2–3 times → you will never forget the different map types.
4. Why Different Map Types Are Useful (Real-Life & Project Reasons)
A. Daily Life
- Driving in traffic → turn Traffic on → avoid red areas
- Exploring new place → switch to Satellite → see real look of buildings
- Using metro/bus → turn Transit on → see stations & lines
- Trekking in hills → use Terrain → see elevation & slopes
B. College Projects / Web Development / Apps
- Showing restaurant locations → use normal map + custom markers
- Showing farm land / forest → use Satellite to see real vegetation
- Traffic analysis project → use Traffic layer + API data
- Tourism app → combine Satellite + Street View
- Cycling route planner → use Bicycling layer
5. Teacher’s Quick Summary Table – Maps Types at a Glance
| Map Type / Overlay | Looks like / What you see | Main use case | How to turn it on (phone) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Default / Map | Clean roads, names, colors | Daily navigation, searching | Default when you open Maps |
| Satellite | Real sky photos (no drawn roads) | See real buildings, trees, new constructions | Layers → Satellite |
| Terrain | Hills/mountains with shadows | Trekking, geography, elevation | Layers → More → Terrain |
| Traffic | Red/yellow/green on roads | Driving, avoid jam | Layers → Traffic |
| Transit | Metro/bus/train lines & stations | Public transport | Layers → Transit |
| Bicycling | Bike lanes & paths | Cycling | Layers → Bicycling |
Understood Maps Types Basic fully now? Knowing the different map types is very important — it changes how you use Google Maps every day and is a common question in interviews/projects when someone asks “How do you switch to satellite view?” or “What is the difference between map and satellite?”
